He studied Media at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and then joined the South African Broadcasting Corporation - SABC. He specialised as a Vision Controller working on both live and pre-recorded studio productions for three years. Ernie joined First Video an independent production company specialising in advertising and narrowcast productions.

Ernie has achieved numerous Avanti awards, Loeries and Golden Horns for both broad and narrowcast projects. He received a SAFTA award for directed a 26 minute documentary ‘Crossing the Barrier’. Telling the untold story of white people living in Soweto. Two SAFTA's for Zola 7 and an EMMY Nomination for a youth talk show - CHOICE.

 

Ernie was executive producer & director for Ochre Moving Pictures. Working on the multi award winning ”Zola 7” a factual entertainment TV series for SABC 1 and series producer for “Kenny Makenzo - Undakerpet” a 13 episode satire TV series for SABC 1. He was the the series director on “Kwanda” a community make over show.

He completed “A slice of Life” in 2011. An international food series that takes a look at the food of Gauteng as an exhilarating, glamorous and occasionally wild epicurean love letter to a region without which the rest of South Africa could not exist.

 

Ernie was the Series Director for Got Talent – Nigeria and X-Factor West Africa. Recently, Ernie directed a 4 part doccie series shot in Rio de Janeiro. In 2016 he directed Isibaya an award winning drama broadcasting on DStv. Ernie was the director on BOLHUIS a crime doccie drama for kykNET. Currently he is the Series Director on It Takes A Village S2 & 3. A reality makeover series.
