Thabiso Tshabalala is a South African actor best known for his starring role as Siyabonga die Opstoker in the kykNET period drama television series Donkerland, in 2013. Not only is he an actor, but the term “not just a pretty face” aptly describes Thabiso.
Born and raised in Pretoria, he describes himself as one of those kids that couldn’t answer when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. He decided to become an actor because he could be anything he wanted to be. From modeling, acting, dancing to public relations and marketing, Thabiso likens himself to a chameleon: he is able to excel no matter what environment he finds himself in.
In 2008 he enrolled for the Musical Theatre course at Tshwane University of Technology and he has not looked back since then. Upon completion of his studies, Thabiso was selected to play the role of The Pied Piper in The National Children’s Theatres’ The Pied Piper and Other Tales. He also played the role of Bagheera in The People’s Theatre’s production of The Jungle Book. In 2014 he played the leading role in Incense Productions’ film, Rowwe Diamante as troubled teen Themba Tshabalala.
Thabiso decided that being the face and talent on stage wasn’t enough, he studied towards a National Higher Certificate in Digital Music Production, which he obtained in 2011. He also obtained his Baccalaureus Technologiae in Musical Theatre in 2013. These two opportunities to learn and grow in his craft ended up introducing him not only to the in’s and outs of stage management but also his new found love for public relations and marketing.
Thabiso has ventured into the world of entrepreneurship alongside his performance career and his company, Khameleon Kreatives has co-produced Freedom the Musical alongside The South African State Theatre. One could say Thabiso is a jack of all trades and master of none but that wouldn’t be an accurate description. Thabiso is simply the man of many hats.
