I Won't Kneel, a documentary by MTF East Africa alumni, Hilda Awori will premiere on Semastori Facebook page on Wednesday, 9th September 2020 at 11am EAT. I Won't Kneel is a story about a girl, who grew-up questioning her my authenticity as a Japadhola girl because she couldn't bring myself to kneel down while greeting other people like many other Japadhola girls did. She was disturbed by the fact that none of the boys were expected to kneel down for anything. A number of cultures within Uganda require women to kneel down while greeting other members of the society. They say that it is a sign of respect. The Japadhola, a small community of people located in Tororo -Eastern Uganda strongly believe in this culture. This results in her wondering, is she a bad girl? In this documentary, she travels to her village in search of answers to questions that have always taunted her in regards to this tradition.
To make this documentary, Hilda reached out to fellow alumnus, Allen Onyige from the MTF West Africa Academy who was Director of Photography (DOP) and Hillary 'Hillax' Lanogwa from the MTF East Africa Academy as the Camera Operator. Hilda wrote, produced and directed the documentary.
