Ministry of Economic Development Shares forecast For Tourism and Housing Industry
As a long time resident of Auckland I've been following the latest developments with the National Trust for the Eadge. With the passing of Associate Government, National Trust Authorities were supposed to be abolished, and the remaining trusts were to be run as community associations under a chief Executive and a board of directors, who would make decisions in accordance with their policies. However, despite this, changes have been made, with the Government announcing they will give the National Trust a further $1.3 million to continue and expand its work with the help of a new Trust Management Company. This comes after the previous administration allowed a group of environmental pressure groups to take over the management of the Eadge.
During my last visit I was also asked to attend a consultation meeting with the Trustees and the NZ Enterprise Agency, which handles the application and future management of the assets. During this meeting it was decided that the Eadge should continue, despite criticism from National Trust Management Company. An official statement has been issued saying that while no decision has been made there are future discussions on the matter. It is understood that the current controversy surrounding the Eadge has been a factor in this. The comments from the CEO and the NZ Enterprise Agency only indicate the level of support the institution has received so far.
The future of the edge still remains uncertain. The officials at the Ministry of Business, Tourism and Trade released a statement saying that the Eadge is still under consideration. There has been much criticism of the edge for a variety of reasons including the impact it will have on the surrounding area, the lack of supporting evidence and analysis and the uncertainty of the future direction it may be taking. No one can honestly say what the impact on the Edge will be, or what impact it will have on the surrounding area and whether it will remain or go.

The future of the Eadge still depends upon the assumptions about the future behaviour of both the Auckland market and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The Reserve Bank is looking to raise interest rates from their current record low, to help maintain healthy growth in the economy. If they were to do this too early, the effect on the EADG Accommodation figures would be significant.
